Comparative and Superlative in German (Komparativ und Superlativ) - A2

Adjectives have three forms to compare things: the Positiv (basic form), the Komparativ (comparative, “bigger”) and the Superlativ (superlative, “the biggest”).

Formation #

Form Rule klein schnell
Positiv basic form klein schnell
Komparativ adjective + -er kleiner schneller
Superlativ am + adjective + -sten am kleinsten am schnellsten

Note: German never uses “mehr” for the comparative of short or long adjectives: mehr interessant → interessanter.

Special Rules #

1. Umlaut in Short Adjectives #

Many one-syllable adjectives with a, o, u get an umlaut:

Positiv Komparativ Superlativ Meaning Hindi
alt älter am ältesten old पुराना / बूढ़ा
jung jünger am jüngsten young जवान
groß größer am größten big, tall बड़ा / लंबा
kalt kälter am kältesten cold ठंडा
warm wärmer am wärmsten warm गरम
lang länger am längsten long लंबा
kurz kürzer am kürzesten short छोटा
oft öfter am öftesten often अक्सर

2. Adjectives Ending in -d, -t, -s, -ß, -sch, -z #

They add -esten in the Superlativ for easier pronunciation:

  • alt → am altesten, heiß → am heißesten, kurz → am kürzesten, hübsch → am hübschesten

3. Adjectives Ending in -el and -er #

They lose the e in the Komparativ:

  • dunkel → dunkler (darker), teuer → teurer (more expensive)

4. Irregular Forms #

These must be learned by heart:

Positiv Komparativ Superlativ Meaning Hindi
gut besser am besten good अच्छा
viel mehr am meisten much, many बहुत / ज़्यादा
gern lieber am liebsten gladly (to like) पसंद से
hoch höher am höchsten high ऊँचा
nah näher am nächsten near पास
groß größer am größten big बड़ा

Making Comparisons #

Structure Use Example Hindi Translation
so … wie equal Tom ist so groß wie Max. (Tom is as tall as Max.) टॉम मैक्स जितना लंबा है।
nicht so … wie not equal Der Bus ist nicht so schnell wie der Zug. (The bus is not as fast as the train.) बस ट्रेन जितनी तेज़ नहीं है।
Komparativ + als different Berlin ist größer als München. (Berlin is bigger than Munich.) बर्लिन म्यूनिख से बड़ा है।
am + -sten the most Im Winter ist es am kältesten. (It’s coldest in winter.) सर्दियों में सबसे ज़्यादा ठंड होती है।

Memory tip: equal = wie, different = als.

Komparativ and Superlativ Before a Noun #

Before a noun, the comparative and superlative take normal adjective endings (see the Adjective Declination notes). The superlative uses der/die/das …-ste instead of “am …-sten”.

  • Ich suche eine größere Wohnung. (I’m looking for a bigger apartment.) हिंदी: मैं एक बड़ा फ़्लैट ढूँढ रहा हूँ।
  • Das ist der schönste Tag meines Lebens. (This is the most beautiful day of my life.) हिंदी: यह मेरी ज़िंदगी का सबसे खूबसूरत दिन है।
