Imperative in German (Imperativ) - A2
The Imperativ (imperative) is used to give commands, instructions, requests and advice: Come here! Please sit down. Take the bus. German has three forms, depending on who you are talking to: du, ihr or Sie.
Formation #
| Form | Who? | Rule | machen | kommen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| du | one friend, family | du-form without -st and without “du” | Mach! | Komm! |
| ihr | several friends | ihr-form without “ihr” | Macht! | Kommt! |
| Sie | formal (one or more) | Sie-form, verb first + Sie | Machen Sie! | Kommen Sie! |
| wir | suggestion for “us” | wir-form, verb first + wir | Machen wir! | Kommen wir! |
Steps for the du-form:
- Take the du-form: du kommst
- Remove -st: komm
- Remove “du”: Komm!

Kommen bitte!→ Kommen Sie bitte! - Separable prefix in the wrong place:
Aufsteh!→ Steh auf! - Using “du” in the sentence:
Komm du her!→ Komm her!
A2 Tips #
- Use the Sie-form with strangers, at offices, shops and with your teacher (unless they say “du”)
- Add bitte almost every time. It makes a big difference
- Instructions in recipes, manuals and signs often use the infinitive instead: Bitte nicht rauchen. (Please do not smoke.)
