Indirect Questions in German (Indirekte Fragen) - A2
Indirect questions (indirekte Fragen) are questions inside another sentence: Can you tell me where the station is? They sound more polite than direct questions. In German, an indirect question is a Nebensatz, so the verb goes to the end.
Direct vs. Indirect Questions #
| Direct Question | Indirect Question |
|---|---|
| Wo ist der Bahnhof? | Können Sie mir sagen, wo der Bahnhof ist? |
| Wann beginnt der Kurs? | Ich weiß nicht, wann der Kurs beginnt. |
| Hast du Zeit? | Ich möchte wissen, ob du Zeit hast. |
Two Types of Indirect Questions #
1. W-Questions → keep the question word #
For questions with wer, was, wo, wann, wie, warum, woher, wohin, welche …, the question word starts the Nebensatz.
- Wie spät ist es? → Weißt du, wie spät es ist? (Do you know what time it is?) हिंदी: क्या तुम्हें पता है कि कितने बजे हैं?
- Warum ist er nicht gekommen? → Ich verstehe nicht, warum er nicht gekommen ist. (I don’t understand why he didn’t come.) हिंदी: मुझे समझ नहीं आता कि वह क्यों नहीं आया।
2. Yes/No Questions → use ob #
Questions without a question word (answered with ja or nein) use ob (whether, if).
- Ist das Museum heute geöffnet? → Wissen Sie, ob das Museum heute geöffnet ist? (Do you know whether the museum is open today?) हिंदी: क्या आपको पता है कि संग्रहालय आज खुला है या नहीं?
- Kommt sie morgen? → Ich frage mich, ob sie morgen kommt. (I wonder whether she is coming tomorrow.) हिंदी: मैं सोच रहा हूँ कि वह कल आएगी या नहीं।
Note: ob = whether/if (question). wenn = if (condition). Don’t mix them up!

Ich weiß nicht, hast du Zeit.→ Ich weiß nicht, ob du Zeit hast. - wenn instead of ob:
Weißt du, wenn er kommt?→ Weißt du, ob er kommt? - Question mark: Use a question mark only if the main sentence is a question. Ich weiß nicht, wo er wohnt. (no question mark)
