Possessive Articles vs. Possessive Pronouns (Possessivartikel und Possessivpronomen) - A2
German has two kinds of possessive words. A possessive article (Possessivartikel) stands before a noun: mein Buch (my book). A possessive pronoun (Possessivpronomen) replaces the noun: Das ist meins (That’s mine).
Possessive Forms #
| Person | Possessive | English | Hindi |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | mein | my / mine | मेरा |
| du | dein | your / yours | तुम्हारा / तेरा |
| er | sein | his | उसका |
| sie | ihr | her / hers | उसका (स्त्री) |
| es | sein | its | उसका |
| wir | unser | our / ours | हमारा |
| ihr | euer | your / yours (plural) | तुम लोगों का |
| sie | ihr | their / theirs | उनका |
| Sie | Ihr | your / yours (formal) | आपका |
Note: euer loses the second e when it gets an ending: eure Wohnung, euren Sohn.
Possessive Articles (before a noun) #
Possessive articles have the same endings as ein / kein.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | mein | meine | mein | meine |
| Akkusativ | meinen | meine | mein | meine |
| Dativ | meinem | meiner | meinem | meinen |
| Genitiv | meines | meiner | meines | meiner |
- Das ist mein Bruder. (That’s my brother.) हिंदी: यह मेरा भाई है।
- Ich besuche meine Eltern. (I’m visiting my parents.) हिंदी: मैं अपने माता-पिता से मिलने जा रहा हूँ।
- Ich fahre mit meinem Auto. (I’m driving my car.) हिंदी: मैं अपनी कार से जा रहा हूँ।
Possessive Pronouns (instead of a noun) #
Possessive pronouns have the same endings as der / die / das. The difference from the article is only in the Nominativ masculine and the Nominativ/Akkusativ neuter.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | meiner | meine | meins | meine |
| Akkusativ | meinen | meine | meins | meine |
| Dativ | meinem | meiner | meinem | meinen |
Note: The neuter form meins is also written meines. In speaking, meins is more common.
Article vs. Pronoun Side by Side #
| Possessive Article | Possessive Pronoun | |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine (Nom.) | Das ist mein Stift. (That’s my pen.) | Der Stift ist meiner. (The pen is mine.) |
| Feminine (Nom.) | Das ist meine Tasche. (That’s my bag.) | Die Tasche ist meine. (The bag is mine.) |
| Neuter (Nom.) | Das ist mein Handy. (That’s my phone.) | Das Handy ist meins. (The phone is mine.) |
| Plural (Nom.) | Das sind meine Schuhe. (Those are my shoes.) | Die Schuhe sind meine. (The shoes are mine.) |
Rule: The pronoun takes the gender of the thing owned, not the owner.
sein or ihr? #
The choice depends on the owner, not the thing owned:
| Owner | Possessive | Example | Hindi Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| a man (er) | sein | Peter und sein Hund (Peter and his dog) | पीटर और उसका कुत्ता |
| a woman (sie) | ihr | Anna und ihr Hund (Anna and her dog) | अन्ना और उसका कुत्ता |
| several people (sie) | ihr | die Kinder und ihr Hund (the children and their dog) | बच्चे और उनका कुत्ता |
Note: Hindi uses अपना when the owner is the subject (मैं अपनी कार से जाता हूँ). German does not have this word. It always uses the normal possessive (Ich fahre mit meinem Auto).
