Reflexive Verbs in German (Reflexive Verben) - A2
Reflexive verbs (reflexive Verben) are verbs where the action goes back to the subject itself. They use a reflexive pronoun (mich, dich, sich …). In the dictionary they are written with sich: sich waschen (to wash oneself), sich freuen (to be happy).
Reflexive Pronouns #
| Person | Akkusativ | Dativ |
|---|---|---|
| ich | mich | mir |
| du | dich | dir |
| er / sie / es | sich | sich |
| wir | uns | uns |
| ihr | euch | euch |
| sie / Sie | sich | sich |
Rule: Only ich and du have different forms in Akkusativ and Dativ. All other forms are the same.
Reflexive Pronoun in the Akkusativ #
This is the normal case. The reflexive pronoun is the only object in the sentence.
- Ich wasche mich. (I wash myself.) हिंदी: मैं नहाता हूँ।
- Du ziehst dich an. (You get dressed.) हिंदी: तुम कपड़े पहनते हो।
- Er rasiert sich. (He shaves.) हिंदी: वह दाढ़ी बनाता है।
Reflexive Pronoun in the Dativ #
When the sentence already has an Akkusativ object (usually a body part or clothing), the reflexive pronoun goes into the Dativ.
| Akkusativ (no other object) | Dativ (with another object) |
|---|---|
| Ich wasche mich. (I wash myself.) | Ich wasche mir die Hände. (I wash my hands.) |
| Du ziehst dich an. (You get dressed.) | Du ziehst dir die Jacke an. (You put on your jacket.) |
| Ich kämme mich. (I comb my hair.) | Ich kämme mir die Haare. (I comb my hair.) |
- Note: German uses the reflexive pronoun + article (mir die Hände) where English uses a possessive (my hands).
Some verbs always use the Dativ: sich etwas vorstellen (to imagine something), sich etwas wünschen (to wish for something), sich etwas ansehen (to have a look at something).
- Ich wünsche mir ein neues Fahrrad. (I wish for a new bike.) हिंदी: मुझे एक नई साइकिल चाहिए।
