Relative Clauses in German (Relativsätze) - A2

A relative clause (Relativsatz) gives more information about a noun. In English it starts with who, which or that. In German it starts with a relative pronoun (der, die, das …) and the verb goes to the end, like in every Nebensatz.

  • Das ist der Mann. Der Mann wohnt neben mir. → Das ist der Mann, der neben mir wohnt. (That is the man who lives next to me.) हिंदी: यह वह आदमी है जो मेरे बगल में रहता है।

Relative Pronouns #

Case Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominativ der die das die
Akkusativ den die das die
Dativ dem der dem denen
Genitiv dessen deren dessen deren

Rule: Relative pronouns look almost like the definite article. Only the Dativ plural (denen) and the Genitiv forms are different.

How to Choose the Right Pronoun #

Two questions decide the relative pronoun:

  1. Gender and number → from the noun it refers to (in the Hauptsatz)
  2. Case → from its role in the relative clause
Der Kuchen, den ich gebacken habe, ist lecker.
   ↑ ↑
masculine Akkusativ (ich habe den Kuchen gebacken)

Nominativ: the pronoun is the subject #

  • Ich habe eine Freundin, die in Wien wohnt. (I have a friend who lives in Vienna.) हिंदी: मेरी एक दोस्त है जो वियना में रहती है।

Akkusativ: the pronoun is the direct object #

  • Das ist der Film, den ich gestern gesehen habe. (That’s the movie that I saw yesterday.) हिंदी: यह वह फ़िल्म है जो मैंने कल देखी।

Dativ: after a Dativ verb or a Dativ preposition #

  • Das ist die Kollegin, der ich geholfen habe. (That’s the colleague whom I helped.) हिंदी: यह वह सहकर्मी है जिसकी मैंने मदद की।
  • Das sind die Kinder, denen ich Deutsch beibringe. (Those are the children whom I teach German.) हिंदी: ये वे बच्चे हैं जिन्हें मैं जर्मन सिखाता हूँ।

Relative Clauses with Prepositions #

If the verb needs a preposition, the preposition comes first, then the relative pronoun. The preposition decides the case.

Verb + Preposition Example Hindi Translation
wohnen in + Dativ Das ist die Stadt, in der ich wohne. (That’s the city I live in.) यह वह शहर है जिसमें मैं रहता हूँ।
sprechen mit + Dativ Der Mann, mit dem ich gesprochen habe, ist Arzt. (The man I spoke with is a doctor.) जिस आदमी से मैंने बात की, वह डॉक्टर है।
warten auf + Akkusativ Der Bus, auf den ich warte, kommt nicht. (The bus I’m waiting for isn’t coming.) जिस बस का मैं इंतज़ार कर रहा हूँ, वह नहीं आ रही।
sich freuen auf + Akkusativ Das ist die Reise, auf die ich mich freue. (That’s the trip I’m looking forward to.) यह वह यात्रा है जिसका मुझे इंतज़ार है।

Note: In English the preposition can go to the end (the city I live in). In German it must go before the relative pronoun.

Relative Clause in the Middle #

The relative clause comes directly after the noun it describes. Sometimes this means it goes in the middle of the Hauptsatz, with commas on both sides.

  • Der Laptop, den ich letzte Woche gekauft habe, ist schon kaputt. (The laptop that I bought last week is already broken.) हिंदी: जो लैपटॉप मैंने पिछले हफ़्ते ख़रीदा था, वह पहले से ही ख़राब हो गया है।
