Reason and Condition Clauses (weil, da, wenn) - A2

Clauses with weil and da give a reason (Grund). Clauses with wenn give a condition (Bedingung). All three start a Nebensatz, so the conjugated verb goes to the end.

Word Order in the Nebensatz #

Position Hauptsatz Nebensatz
Hauptsatz first Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
Nebensatz first Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.

Rule: When the Nebensatz comes first, it counts as position 1. The verb of the Hauptsatz comes directly after the comma: verb, verb.

Reason: weil, da and denn #

Connector Meaning Hindi Word Order Typical Use
weil because क्योंकि verb at the end answer to “Warum?”, most common
da since, as चूँकि verb at the end reason already known, often at the start, formal
denn because क्योंकि normal word order (verb in position 2) written and spoken, never at the start
  • Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeite. (I’m learning German because I work in Germany.) हिंदी: मैं जर्मन सीख रहा हूँ क्योंकि मैं जर्मनी में काम करता हूँ।
  • Da es regnet, nehmen wir den Bus. (Since it’s raining, we’ll take the bus.) हिंदी: चूँकि बारिश हो रही है, हम बस लेंगे।
  • Ich lerne Deutsch, denn ich arbeite in Deutschland. (I’m learning German because I work in Germany.) हिंदी: मैं जर्मन सीख रहा हूँ क्योंकि मैं जर्मनी में काम करता हूँ।

Answering “Warum?” #

  • Warum kommst du nicht mit? – Weil ich keine Zeit habe. (Why aren’t you coming along? – Because I don’t have time.) हिंदी: तुम साथ क्यों नहीं चल रहे? – क्योंकि मेरे पास समय नहीं है।

In spoken answers, a weil-clause can stand alone. da cannot be used this way.

Condition: wenn #

wenn means if (condition) or whenever (repeated events).

Use Example Hindi Translation
condition (if) Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit. (If I have time, I’ll come along.) अगर मेरे पास समय होगा, तो मैं साथ आऊँगा।
repeated event (whenever) Wenn ich nach Hause komme, koche ich. (Whenever I come home, I cook.) जब भी मैं घर आता हूँ, मैं खाना बनाता हूँ।
future (when) Wenn der Kurs vorbei ist, machen wir eine Party. (When the course is over, we’ll have a party.) जब कोर्स ख़त्म होगा, हम पार्टी करेंगे।

wenn … dann #

In the Hauptsatz you can add dann (then) for emphasis:

  • Wenn du müde bist, dann geh ins Bett. (If you’re tired, then go to bed.) हिंदी: अगर तुम थके हुए हो, तो सो जाओ।

falls #

falls (in case) is similar to wenn, but the condition is less likely:

  • Falls es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause. (In case it rains, we’ll stay at home.) हिंदी: अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम घर पर रहेंगे।

wenn or als? #

Both can mean “when”. Use this table to decide:

Present / Future Past
once wenn als
repeated wenn wenn (often with immer)
  • Als ich klein war, wohnte ich in Delhi. (When I was little, I lived in Delhi.) हिंदी: जब मैं छोटा था, मैं दिल्ली में रहता था।
