Genitive Prepositions in German (Präpositionen mit Genitiv) - B1
Genitive prepositions (Präpositionen mit Genitiv) are prepositions that require the noun after them to be in the genitive case. They are less common in everyday speech than accusative or dative prepositions, but they appear often in written German, news, official letters and the B1 exam.

Before using genitive prepositions, you need to know how articles and nouns change in the Genitiv.

Rules:
- Masculine and neuter nouns add -s or -es:
- -es after one-syllable nouns: des Mannes, des Kindes
- -es always after -s, -ß, -x, -z: des Hauses, des Fußes
- -s after nouns with more than one syllable: des Lehrers, des Wetters
- Feminine and plural nouns do not change. Only the article changes (der).
- n-Declination nouns add -(e)n, not -s: des Studenten, des Kollegen
- Adjectives after an article in the Genitiv always end in -en: trotz des schlechten Wetters

- wegen, trotz, während, statt/anstatt, innerhalb, außerhalb are the most important for B1.
- aufgrund, infolge, bezüglich, anhand sound formal. They are used in letters, emails and news.
Special Cases #
Spoken German Often Uses Dativ #
In everyday speech, many Germans use the Dativ after wegen, trotz and während.
- Written / Exam: Wegen des Wetters bleiben wir zu Hause. (Because of the weather, we stay at home.) हिंदी: मौसम की वजह से हम घर पर रहते हैं।
- Spoken: Wegen dem Wetter bleiben wir zu Hause.
You will hear the second form often, but always use the Genitiv in writing and in the exam.
When the Genitive is Not Visible → von + Dativ #
If a plural noun has no article or adjective, the genitive cannot be seen. In this case use von + Dativ. The same applies to place names.
- innerhalb von zwei Wochen (within two weeks) हिंदी: दो हफ़्तों के भीतर
- außerhalb von Berlin (outside Berlin) हिंदी: बर्लिन के बाहर
wegen + Personal Pronouns #
With pronouns, wegen becomes one word:

- Deinetwegen sind wir zu spät gekommen. (Because of you, we arrived late.) हिंदी: तुम्हारी वजह से हम देर से पहुँचे।
- Note: In daily conversation, meinetwegen also means “as far as I’m concerned / fine by me”. हिंदी: मेरी तरफ़ से ठीक है।
Preposition vs. Conjunction #
Many genitive prepositions have a matching connector (Konnektor). With a preposition you use a noun. With a connector you use a Nebensatz with the verb at the end. Changing one into the other is a common B1/B2 exercise.

7. Location Outside a Place #
Unser neues Haus liegt außerhalb der Stadt, aber in der Nähe des Bahnhofs.

- “außerhalb” + Genitiv; “in der Nähe” is also followed by a genitive noun (des Bahnhofs)
